Can I get an overview of WINS? I know adding an entry to a WINS server, on a network that is connected to mine will allow hosts looking for this server to find it via it's name. I like this method of "discovery" as opposed to adding a host file to a machine. Specifically, I have a network, remote site has a network. We have a T1 between us, they have ethernet segments, I have ethernet segments. We don't want to send all traffic of theirs thru my network, but I do want to provide some services to them. Previously we'd put a hosts file on the machine looking for my server. But, when this machine gets rebuilt, host file goes away, helpdesk phone starts ringing.."how do we get to bluezone thru you guys again?" and people start scratching their heads.
How does WINS remedy this situation? I know it works, but want to know how it works. Thanks

well, it's not so bad. I understand really whats happening. Its name resolution. So the name gets resolved so they can enter in a meaningful name, and wins just does naming. The routing protocol sends the packets the right way. i knew if I thought about it long enough, I'd understand. Peace out.
