Router problem - moved by Tom

Hello,

My PC is infected with spyware and first I thought it was just a simple spyware so I cleaned it up but every time I run Lavasoft my computer is still infected by 10-20 spywares (tracking cookie).

I reformatted my pc in hope that it would kill the infection and after I reformatted everything was fine I had no more spyware until I connected my PC to my router so now I am pretty sure it is my router.

I checked and found several ports opened, I closed them and also my router has the wireless feature turned on but I don't even use that. I have a Netgear CG814WG. Is my router really the problem and if so how can I fix this problem?

I hope someone can help me

Thanks,
John.

Howdy lJohnl,

Welcome to CTH. Although it is a possibility infection might alter router settings it is not likely it would survive a reformat of a hard drive. I will move this request to the CTH Networking forum for some advice on your router issues.

I think I am misunderstanding the problem. You reformatted your computer, but as soon as your reconnected the router you detected spyware again?

Adware/spyware don't come in through open ports (although trojans and worms do). The only way I can think you would have received the adware/spyware after formatting is if you had backed up your files (internet caches often contain the files necessary to infect) or you went to a website that infects your computer almost immediately.
