Here's a good tutorial for dual booting Win XP and Ubuntu Linux:
http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/...ot-laptop.html

This tutorial refers to a laptop, but procedure would be the same for a desktop computer.

Note: Ubuntu is one of the easiest Linux distros to dual boot. Do your homework first on how to install the boot loader GRUB. The biggest problem with a dual boot install is how to configure the boot loader. If you make a mistake there you can end up not being able to boot into your Windows operating system.

Hope this helps.

If Windows Xp is installed first than all you need to do is set a seperate partion on your hard drive for Ubuntu (just make a it one big free space). Then when you install Ubuntu select the option that says use largest continous free space and it will automatically partition that space for you. Finally make sure that it recognizes Windows Xp at the end when it installs Grub. If it does then select Yes to install GRUB to the MBR.

Bam!!! Now your dual-booting.
