Network Card Help!!

I recently moved into college and wanted to connect to the internet. To do so, I need to have an ethernet card installed on my computer. Having connected through wireless networks previously, I had to purchase a new PCI Ethernet Adapter card.

I built my PC a while back and it hasn't failed me until now. I have an ASUS P4P800-E with an Intel Pentium 4, 3GHz, and 1GB of RAM.

I tried to install the card, and I followed the directions. When I thought the card was installed, it didn't work. Under device manager, the card was showing but had an exclamation point next to it, and it said, "The device cannot start. (Code 10)". Under device manager, there are also two yellow question marks for both "Ethernet Controller" and "RAID Controller". I don't know what either of those means, as I have never had to worry about them in the past.

I tooled around with the card, and went back, returned the card, and bought a new one. I tryed to install it again, and got the same problem. I've put the cards in number of different PCI slots, to no avail. I was hoping if any of you could help. I have included some screen shots for refrence.

You can also go back to device manager and where the yellow question marks are go into each one and click on the drivers tab and then click on update driver. have it search for drivers and let it connect to the internet. It will find the drivers for you.

It would be a lot easier if you could find a wireless link that you could connect to for downloading these things. Did you get a CD with the adapter? You should be able to use the CD that came with the MB it may have those drivers on it. You can always try going to DLINK and hunting up the adapter you bought and look for their downloads so that you can download that from them. It looks as if you can go to Intel to find a driver for the eithernet controller. I think that's where you will need to look.

the CD that came with the adapter didn't help. I already installed the drivers from that.

Go to the MB manufacturers website and look for it there in the download section.

It seems as if your eithernet controller is :
Marvel 88E8001 Gigabit Lan Controller Supporting 10/100/1000 Base-T Eithernet.
That's what it has on the Asus website for your P4P800-E MB. So I went to the Marvel website and found the driver that you need for that controller.
THIS driver if for WIN XP so if you have something other than XP or even XP64 it will be different.
You will notice under "Driver Search Results" That beside keyword is the controller # 88E8001 and beside platform is XP.
Here is the link.

It will also make your life a whole lot easier if you remove the ethernet card you bought. In certain circumstances, a live ethernet card on your motherboard and one in an expansion slot will get into a bit fo a fight.

As you can see, it's fairly confsing when you have two devices screaming for drivers!

Also get the network settings from the internet provider (usually your dorm reception desk will be able to provide them). It's fairly straightforward to follow the instructions they'll give you, which will allow your ethernet connection to talk to the dorm network.
