ok i downloaded avg-free edition.
and i look in the background.. and its taking up too much ram, oh dear lord.
please i only want this program when im scanning my computer for viruses, not to take up 25% of my memory, cause it thinks i have too much..
please how do i disable this in the background completly, and without it starting back up when i start my computer.
i tryed msconfig and that.
i have 1gb of ram (ahoyzie!) but i still dont like programs that i dont use taking up over 100mb's of my memory..

I just checked Task Manager for AVG usage (avgamsvr.exe, avgcc.exe, avgemc.exe and avgupsvc.exe in the Processes list). Usage in Task Manager is in kilobytes and those four processes add up to about 2 megs of RAM.
If your installation of AVG is using hundreds of megabytes of RAM, have you checked to see if it's running full system scan (which uses a lot of resources)? If so, the RAM use will drop once the scan is finished.
However, if you still want to disable it, right click on the AVG icon in the Notification Area (space around the time display on the Taskbar), left click Launch Control Center. You can disable the individual parts of AVG there.

Just checked myself and AVG uses nothing like what you are reporting it does. Not a good idea to disable it either.

AVG only takes 2megs when running in the background, (the mail scanner, updater, and scheduler), it takes up more when scanning the system. The free version sets a daily schedule for scanning, iether turn it off, or set the time for when you aren't using the computer, (but it's still on).

AVGUPSVC.exe-AVGEMSVC.exe-AVGAMSVR.exe. However I don't see the point since the services only use 2megs of ram.
