Hi there,

basically, a benchmark for a piece of hardware like your CPU, Hard Disk Drive or graphic card is a series of tests which will give a performance indicator as to how well it performs at certain tasks or where improvements could be made.

In a benchmark for a HDD it could be how fast it transfers files, random access time and file writing performance.

With a graphic card it could be how well it will run a certain game at different screen resolutions. It could be how many Frames Per Second it can run or how well it handles quality settings like Anti-Alias and Anisotropic Filtering.

In some tests the higher the score the better and vice-versa.

thanks dohray your help is appreciated,so would it be useful to run these benchmark tests? if so would i need to do them a regular intervals?.thanks again

No worries vinny...as for running the benchmarking, it's useful for seeing how a piece of hardware or your system rates (especially if it compares it with another make or model).

It can also be used to gauge whether or not to upgrade to a different component.

As for runnning at regular intervals, there's really no need to do that. Unless you're a serious gamer/speed freak and constantly change video card drivers, tweak the OS settings and such like to get a better score from a programme like 3D Mark 06.

Run them after installing a new piece of hardware to see what the difference is, if any.
