hi, i currently have at&t dsl which i bought a long time ago from sbc and now that at&t took it over the lines have been filled so you cannot get dsl in my area anymore. i am paying $40 for 300kbs speeds while others at at&t are paying $20 for 1.5mbps. so i want to know if earthlink is actually good because i can get 1.5mpbs for $30. so is it a good idea to switch? and once i switch i could never go back to at&t.

A faster speed, is a faster speed. Earthlink is repubtable, although I don't have any personal experience with them. What about cable?

I have known people in my area who subscribed to earthlink and had nothing but problems, and I have know those who would swear by them. One thing fer sure, do not expect to get the speeds they promise.

Whatever you do, be sure to read everything before subscribing.

is there a way to check if earthlink has good reputation in my area because i know that with at&t my friends who live like 7 blocks awayfrom me get 1.5mps speeds because they live in a different area code and not up the hill.

That has nothing to do with reputation. With DSL, your speed is determined by how far away from the main switch you are. I also don't think area code has anything to do with it, unless there is another switch station right near them.

thats my point if they have bad reputation in my area i would know their building is too far away to actualy get they full1.5mbps speed and i would probably get 300kbps which im getting now

You will never get the full speed an ISP is advertising simply because that is the best possible speed you could get under perfect circumstances. Without knowing someone who uses Earthlink in your area, I'm not sure how you would test this. Maybe another member can help you.
