Hello!

I have a Gateway laptop with a wireless internet connection (the OS is Windows XP Professional) and my wireless card is the Intel Pro/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI adapter and last night I was just checking my email when I lost my internet connection. This has happened before, but this time the network wasn't even being detected. Nothing was showing up in the Network connections folder which has never happened before.

So I went into the device manager and next to the name was an exclamation mark, so I clicked properties and it said ""The device could not start Error Code 10".

I can't get connected to the internet on that computer now (i'm on the family PC) so it's hard getting updates over there.

I went and talked to Gateway, they had me do all kinds of things, I did a system restore, they gave me a link to a supposed update, I tried taking the card out and reconnecting it, and nothing is working. I've seen people with similar problems mention updating the driver, but I'm not sure where to go to get the correct driver update. What Gateway sent me didn't work, though it said it was for the 2200 and mine is 2100 so I don't know if that matters or not.

The guy eventually said my card might be broken but it will cost me over $300 to fix, which I do not have, so I decided to come here for help/advice. Please, if anyone can help me I would appreciate that!

I am not extremely computer smart and don't know what code 10 even means, so I'm at a loss!

Drivers usually don't give out to code 10, and after looking at the Gateway drivers, the 2200 should have worked. Chances are your wireless card is shot.

Here is a good replacement for considerably less than $300:

Have you tried intels generic driver?
intel driver (http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Search.aspx?Prod_nm=+Intel+Pro%2FWireless+ LAN+2100+3B+Mini+PCI+adapter&lang=eng&MissingSearchTxt=Please+enter+a+valid+product+name %2C+filename+or+product+ID+%23.&x=29&y=3)
Have you tried right clicking the device in device manager, click uninstall, reboot and see if windows picks it up.
