Beryl

Does anyone know how to get this working under Fedora 7 with an ATI XPRESS 200 with between 64 and 128MB of RAM. I was dinkin around with it but never could get the thing to work then after Fedora did buku updates the x server went south on me. I plan on doing a reinstall on this drive laying here but wanted some detailed input on how to get Beryl up and running.

I saw this running on an old Compaq and was just flabbergasted at the superiority (not to mention the way cool effects) it had over aeroglass and that the thing was running on a ancient video card.

Hiya PC, welcome back.
The biggest issue is probably the ATI 3D accelerated driver. If you've got that working OK, Beryl should work fine.

Yep, I've had Beryl working great on a 64MB PCI GF4MX440.

Before I go yanking the hard drive out and slap the smaller Linux drive in, is it possible to have Beryl work within VMWare? Same OS, just virtual everything else. I know, maybe I'm really reaching here, but hey, if it means less work then I'm all for it.

As far as I know, the answer is no. Because it doesn't actually use your physical hardware on your computer.

Ok. Posting from a ancient 98 system here. I'm installing Fedora now, which with I've selected for the install should take oh about two hours. After it gets up and running I'll post back here from there and let you know if it works on my feeble attempt at a Beryl install.

Ok. I've got Fedora 7 backup and now it's doing the buku update it did before which took like forever. Anyway, the last time this thing crashed. I believe it was the X-Server that went south, possibly due to a misidentified video card? Not sure if that is the case though. It's been forever since I last dinked (hey, if your going to dink, then DINK) with Linux I just can't remember a whole lot. The last time was RedHat 6...

Anyways if the same thing happens this time I'll need some assitance in getting the X-Server back up and running again.

Another thing is the wireless network card. With the last install it saw it but I could not actually use it. I tried a simple activation but that failed (using the 10/100 hard wired card). It's a Broadcom card and I've heard that Linux drivers are a pain with these. I'll get back on the chipset for it. With this install is no longer sees it so I'm not sure exactly what gives there. I can't 'activate' the card via the keyboard but then I couldn't do that with the last install either.

1) Fedora 5/6/7 should correctly identify even ancient video chips but won't load proprietory (nVidia or ATI) drivers to give you 3D immediately. The X server killer is normaly Display identification. Is it detecting the screen properly?
2) Wireless - need to know the chipset - use lspci.
