Hello everyone, I have had the same router-model hookup for over 2 years now and it has most always worked fine.

Info:
Comcast Cable is my provider
Motorola Surfboard is my modem
Linksys WRT54G is my router

2 weeks ago, we lost internet and power due to a storm.
Power is restored, and the internet seems restored.

I can plug the modem directly into my computer and I get internet fine, but when I plug my modem into my router, the router's "internet" button does not light up, nor can I access the internet. I can however go to 192.168.1.1 and look at the router, and I can share files across the network.

so I did the following things:
Unplug modem, router computer
Wait 1 min
Plugin modem
Wait 30 secs
Plugin router

The internet button still does not light up on the router.

Then I held the reset button on my router which reset everything to default, cycled power again, still nothing. I then upgraded router to latest firmware and tried again, still nothing.

I called comcast and they said everything appeared to be fine but tried to help me with my router by telling me to do basically the things I already tried.

My router is set to DHCP, infact I made it the same configuration as before the storm, yet nothing. I can't get an IP address for the router even if I hit DHCP renew.

Router status page:

Firmware Version: v4.21.1, Nov. 6, 2006
Current Time: Not Available
MAC Address: 00:19:DE:C5:27:7E
Router Name: WRT54G
Host Name:
Domain Name:
Internet
Configuration Type
Login Type:
Automatic Configuration - DHCP
IP Address: 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask: 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0
DNS 1: 208.67.222.222
DNS 2: 208.67.220.220
DNS 3:
MTU: 1500

Why is it that the router unexpectedly stopped being able to connect to the internet?

If the internet light is not coming on, that means that the cable is not being sensed. That can be because the ethernet port on the router or the modem is fried or that you have a bad ethernet cable.

I've tested this with different cables so its not the ethernet cables.

So you believe that the router ethernet port itself is fried? Is there any way to test or fix this besides seeing that I don't have internet or an external ip address on the router?

Unfortunately no. The only way to test for a bad port is to use a different one. In this case, I would try to get your ISP to provide a new modem... They'll likely want you to connect your PC directly to the modem for tests though.
