How do I register/reserve a domain name?

I am VERY new to this, and want to register a domain name that is apparently available. Who is reputable to do this, or can I do it myself?

If this is your first time, maybe it would be best to get it at the same time and from the same place as your hosting service. some hosting services will even give it free as part of the hosting packages. I personally use ipowerweb.com and the domain name comes free.

I also use godaddy.com for additional names.

You can use your own computer as a web server. This will replace the function of a web host (it will be you). You will need a fairly decent-spec'd computer that you're willing to leave on 24/7, and a broadband internet connection. A static IP address is preferred, but dynamic hosting services exist for dynamic IPs (DynDNS, No-IP).

You will need to be versed in how to install, secure, and maintain an HTTP server, as well as any other web services you'll need (server-side scripting, SQL, email, FTP). This will only be any good for personal or small websites.

If you want a proper domain name (eg. www.jefferywebb.com) you will still need to pay for the domain registration and a DNS service, but this won't cost anywhere near as much as web hosting (though the purchase of a server PC and ISP bandwidth costs, as well as dedicated time, may negate this).

Check with godaddy as mentioned above they have very reasonable rates and the are reliable. Once regestered and you have access to your account upload your files, replace their welcome.html with yours and your set
