The formal story is here.
Off the top of my head, if I remember right, a Finnish college student named Linus wanted his computer to communicate or transfer files (or something) with his colleges computer that used a nice operating system called Unix. Using his knowhow he wrote his own kernel that was compatible with Unix to do this. A kernel is an operating systems basic programming that adapts it to use the hardware and equipment of a given computer, but not too much about what you're gonna do with that. He named it Linux and put it out there for whoever wanted to use it for free. There's now a few hundred distributions based on the Linux kernel out there and a good place to find a list of them and more is distrowatch.com
