Bizzare time out error.
Greetings folks. I have the most frustrating of errors afflicting me at the moment, and I have tried everything my rather remedial knowledge of computers can supply. It seems that every time I attempt to load up my guild's forum page, and only that page, I time out. Everything else is just peachy, just that one page. I know it's a user error because I've talked to all my friends and the page works fine for them. I have tried clearing my cache, and tried using Internet Explorer (I use Firefox). This started only recently as well, I have been posting on the forums for months.
I ran virus and spyware scans, nothing. For reference, this is the error as it appears in Firefox: The connection has timed out. The server is taking too long to respond. * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web. What gets me is that it's just the one page, and I'm the only one that's affected by it. If anyone can help, I would be eternally thankful, and keep in mind, I'm not well versed in computers, so you'll have to explain things a bit. ![]() Thanks! |

First off how are you connected to the internet? Plus what is the GHz of your CPU? This way I can help you with the way Firefox opens pages for you.
First off download Chromedit Plus from this link and install it. http://webdesigns.ms11.net/chromeditp.html Then using Firefox Go into tools and highlight Chromedit Plus with your mouse when the side panel opens click on Chromedit, then minimize it to the task bar. Go to the link below: http://codebetter.com/blogs/darrell..../28/48720.aspx At the top where it has "Common to all Configurations" and copy and paste user_pref files to the the chromedit that you have in your task bar. Open the user.js tab and paste them there. Then minimize it to the task bar again. Then if you are using Cable or DSL and have a 2.0GHz cpu or higher, under "Fast Computer Fast Connection" copy the user_pref files and paste them in the user.js of Chromedit )that is in the taskbar) you will have to hit enter to move the curser to the next line in user.js since it will be at the end of the last line copied before. Then just paste those files there and click save. Now that will speed up the opening of the pages plus use more connections to that page for it to open before it times out.

Well I'm using Roadrunner as my cable service, if that's what you meant, and my CPU is 2.41 GB. I applied all the changes without problems, but I still time out on that page

Use this information to change the length of time that Firefox takes trying to open a web page. By doing this Firefox will try longer to open the page.
You can. Type "about:config" in the FF-address-bar without the " and press enter/ Filter on "timeout". There you'll find values for "network.http.keep-alive.timeout", 2network.proxy.failover_timeout", and so on. Doubleclick a value and set it higher.

Hi. Well issues with sign-in time outs, esp. banks, mail & forum sign-ins are common.
Well most of the times these sites go into secured mode while you login. (http://www.yahoo.com - normal) (https://mail.google.com - Secured) . this is how by looking at the address bar you can tell the difference. now what happens is secured websites usually timeout because of some default settings in Windows are too large for the kind of connection. You said you are using RoadRunner. Can you tell me do you need a username and password to connect to the internet or all you have to do is just start your computer and the cable directly plugged in to the back connects you all the time? coz if you use a modem / router and use a username password u use a type of connection CALLED PPPoE and MTU is your problem. MTU is max Transmisson Unit which is the largest physical packet that can be successfuly transmitted over your connection. windows default is 1500 and it is the max. there are no values behind it. but 1500 is too large for pppoe as pppoe adds extra 8 bt for encapsulation. on top of that whenever you sign into secured sites they add extra load to the packet as your username and password is encrypted. which means 1500+8+secured site overhead. but 1500is the max possible.... hence possibly the problem .... please consider this. if you feel it is the issue ... lemme know and i will help you edit it. PLEASE REVERT ON: techhelp@nikspace.org. I dont visit the forum frequently. so u might not get my reply, if you've posted it here, on time. Last edited by netwizz; September 6th, 2007 at 06:23 PM. Right, well that's the oddest thing I've ever seen. I log on this morning, and it's magically fixed. Just like that. I didn't do a thing, it was still timing out when I logged out last night. I'm happy, but confused. Anyway, thanks very much to those who helped, I appreciate it
