Video file extensions etc

Hi,

I'm trying to get to grips with burning video to DVD. What I'm looking for is a list and explanation of all the many video file extensions. Any sugestions as I've tried googling and come up with way too much info? Also a tutorial on the subject in general? One problem I've read about is when a video is burned to DVD and it only plays on the PC and not on DVD player. Thats what I whant to understand etc etc etc

M

See here for an explanation of the files on a DVD video disc. That should be all the file details you need to know.

When a DVD plays on a PC but not a DVD player, it's either because it's not a proper DVD movie (many people just assume they can copy any old video file, stick it in a DVD player and have it play), or, there's a problem with the player itself - some players won't play DVD Rs; many won't play RWs; some will play DVD-R, but not DVD+R, or vice versa; some will play DVD-RW but not +RW, or vice versa; some will play certain brands of discs but not others. There's really no way around this other than to ensure you use a quality brand DVD-R (which provides the most compatibility).

Thanks fpr that. That wasn't quite what I meant...But...that's informative in it's own right! What I meant was all the different video files on DVD,PC etc etc, and I get confused!

As to not playning on a DVD player I assumed that people had saved to the wrong file type. So If I'm reading you correctly if I use a good quality DVD-R I should be pretty much OK?

Maybe something more like this? No list is going to be 100% complete though, they are too many obscure formats around.
