what is .rm extensions and why can't i play them?

Well, then I would suggest getting the latest version.
.rm files are Real Media streaming video files and are playable on RealPlayer.

When you say Real Player I presume this also applies to Real Alternative to play these files? I guess what I asking clarification on is: I Real Alternative a
--total-- alternative to Real Player?

Real Alternative uses the RealPlayer libraries to decode RealMedia files, hence it can play anything RealPlayer can. VLC can also play RM files, but not the variable bit rate ones (.rmvb).
