Windows Update - won't!

Is anyone else having problems with Windows98 update? Or have they stopped supporting it already?

I clicked on scan for updates and its been sitting on 0% for the last half hour

Works fine for me (Win98 first edition not second)

Try clearing your cache:
Go to Tools>Internet Options> And click the Delete files button.

Shut down Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
Go to Control Panel/Internet, and clear your temporary Internet Files.
Go to the Privacy tabs, and delete all cookies . (Or, in the case of IE 5.5 and lower, on the General tab, click Settings > Show files, and hit 'delete cookies')

Now go to the Advanced tab, and click Restore Defaults.
Next, on to the Security tab, highlight 'Internet, and click restore defaults there as well.

Go to your Program Files/Windows Update folder.
Find and delete wuhistv3.log

Now go to Start > Run, and type the following commands, each line followed by clicking 'enter':

regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 mshtml.dll

Note: you should see a brief 'registration succeeded' message after each entry.

Reboot, and see whether that helps.

Internet Connection

Possible solution: I have noticed this happen with an incorrect MTU setting on a firewall/router. Contact your ISP and make sure that you have their latest router or that it is configured correctly. Also be sure to disable Norton Firewall - any other software firewalls, internet security or other protection schemes.

The MTU thing is only with broad-band connections or hardware firewalls.

Check your IE security settings and make sure you say yes to every pop up box that appears. If this fails then try uninstalling and reinstalling IE.

This presumes that the checking is just sitting there with the E spinning like it is trying to navigate but failing. Otherwise see above post. Good suggestions there.

I was redirected to this thread with my query and it seems that I no longer have a windows update folder so even rhough I still get the critical updates message there is nothing there. I have followed all the commands so far I think and I don't know what to do. I find the infromation on the windows help page very difficult to follow sometimes.

Try this Page

If not then try this:

1. Download This File to your desktop

2. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.

3. Click "Extract to."

4. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."

5. Go to the location you selected and right click on the iuctl.inf file.

6. Click "Install."

Reboot now try.

Hi
this just means you don't have "show known extections" ON in folderview options, so you do not see the INF extention.

thus, rightclick iuctl, and you will get the install option in that menu

Well I haven't got a problem now, I tried upgrading to XP, found it wouldn't detect half my hardware, restored Windoze 98 and then lost it (still not sure how). Since I've reformatted and reinstalled the update is working!

I hate to appear dense but when I right click on iuctl I get a message that says extract and then when I click on that it says choose a folder to save files.
Where would I find folderview options?
