Question Error 0xc0000142

I recently purchased a new RAM card (512) for my windows 2000. My current RAM is 256.
When i insert the 512 card, it registers under setup and in system. but most of my startup programs, mstask, svchost, ISUSPM ect. come up with a 0xc0000142 error. Every once inawhile while still running with the RAM in, i can open an application (firefox, search, task manager). but mostly, when triing to start them, i get 0xc0000142 as well.
But if i take the 512 card out, it works fine. What is wrong and how the heck do i fix this?

Try pulling the 256 module and use just the 512 module, see if you get the same errors. It could be a bad ram module, It happens. It could be you bought the wrong type of ram, by that I mean some boards are particular about the make of ram they accept, and some ram modules from different manufacter's don't play well together. give us the make and model of your motherboard and both ram modules.

Can't tell a whole lot about your specs from what you've provided, although I can tell you're running onboard video using 64megs of system ram. .

did you try the new stick of ram by itself in the system? and did it work or not?

About the new memory, I was never very good at tracking down part numbers, so what brand is it? PNY, Mushkin, Kingston, OCZ, etc. or is it generic?

I still need your system specs. If it is a dell, compaq, hp, or gateway, there should be a sticker on the outside with a model #. example:

compaq emachine T2958.

If its a custom rig download the linked file and run it.
Everest home edition
Mostly I need the motherboard specs for right now.

Thats it, here's the specs for that system
Presario SR1403wm

The way I see it, it's either a bad memory module or an incorrect bios setting. You can either reset the bios to factory defaults and then try the memory, (if you do that make sure you write down the current settings so you can put them back to where they were before you reset the bios, if it doesn't work) or return the memory and exchange it for another. I would return it and try another. when you do, make sure the module meets the following specs:
DDR400 PC3200, 184p DIMM, 2.5v, Sync, CL=3.0

Are you sure you want to do this the hard way? If you make the wrong setting in there you can make the system so it won't boot.

Read the following link. It's the basic bios guide from HP/Compaq, they do a better job than I could on explaining basic navigation in the bios. Something they don't say however is use a pen and paper to record the current values of any settings BEFORE changing them, That way you can reset them to their current values if needed.

. Ok, getting a replacement is probably the smart way to go. But at least bookmark the link, If you're going to do your own upgrades you will need to be able to navigate the bios.
