USB port trouble....still!!! (NEC add-on card)
Hi Everyone,
I was on here a few weeks ago with a query about my USB port. Basically to recap, my existing USB will not work, I have tried updating drivers etc etc, been into BIOS to check they are enabled, in the end I had 2 options, to upgrade my BIOS (got quoted $40 there is no way I can pay that!) or buy a USB add on card. I recently did the latter. However, I cannot get this to work either! I managed to put it in ok, and I have followed the instructions, but it says at the end 'check if NEC PCI to USB enhanced host controller is installed by checking the device manager' Well it is there, but with a yellow warning symbol, in properties it says device not present, not working or does not have all the drivers. There is nothing in the manual to say what to do if it isn't there! I have tried removing the whole thing and re doing it, but it is still the same. There are another 6 entries on the USB list that seem to be working (NEC USB open host ctllr etc), but none of the actual ports new or old work! Another point, during installation, near the end it should have come up 'search for driver for PCI Universal Serial Bus ' then I was to press cancel, only this never came up. The card is NEC USB 2.0 5-port PCI card. I am running on windows 98. I hope someone can help me or direct me to someone who can! Thanks in advance for your help. |

I recently had a similar problem, USB board was recognized but no drivers were loaded and would not function.
I ended up doing several things, In the BIOS I disabled the USB controller, shut down and removed all unecessary cards, Left only the video and USB card. The system then found the card, loaded the necessary drivers and the device manager showed all A-OK. I the shut down, restarted and enabled the USB in the BIOS and since then everything has worked A-OK. I hope this makes sense and works for you as well as it did for me. |

Boot up and hit F8 after the black screen and it will say starting windows,a menu will come up. Select SAFE MODE
Now go into Device manager and highlight and remove every entry in USB. Now reboot normally and the add new hardware wizard should come up and find the card and install the drivers. If a floppy came with the card insert it when it says find drivers, check the box for FLOPPY and it should find them.

Thanks guys, but none of those things worked! I am back to sq 1
I think the problem is linking the driver in, as I do have it, there is a disk with the usb card. The instructions breifly say: *Wizard comes up to search for driver for NEC USB Open host ctllr, put in Windows cd, don't select location etc etc. *Same again *As PCI Universal Serial Bus shows click cancel (note: in my device manager it shows SiS 7001 Pci to USB open host ctllr, I assume this is my on-board port that is not working anyway) This option doesn't come up!It never does the full search only a few auto searches *Find the file D:\NEC-USB2.0.....u2v2_062 This runs a program from the disk which I assume is the driver(s), it seems to work ok *restart computer and check if NEC PCI to USB enhanced host controller is installed It is there but with errors as detailed in OP I have tried to update driver but it comes up with 'the best driver is already installed', I have tried to specify the location as the d drive etc but it refuses to work. Sorry to waffle on, but can anyone give me any pointers? Thankyou very much |

USB
Hi there Squash,
Can you tell me if you are running a AMD processor with a VIA chipset. I have a AMD computer and a Pentium. I had alot of problems with the use of USB on the AMD but had no problems with the same configuration on the Pentium. It had something to do with the VIA chipset. The German :rocker: |
