registry problem

Ok! So my computer was running sort of ok till I installed Symantec SystemWorks, that's when the trouble began. I tried removing the utility by going to the install remove software, did that. Upon startup I get a msdos message in startup about system.ini file missing or something, so I folo Symantec's instruction's on manually uninstalling software thru regedit. Did that. Upon restart, my C/hard drive is renamed as a removable disk. So I go back and do a backup registry. Upon restart my computer will only start in safe mode. all my other registry backups are corrupt or something as they wont load. I've only got the standard 5 backup registries. What can I do short of having to reinstall the OS with the chances of loosing drivers for my various hardware.
Please help.

Hi ghr4new, welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

Ow...you shouldn't really be in the regedit unless you really know what
is going on in there...even if Symantec tells you to go there.

There is one small shot at getting your computer back. You can do this from
Safe Mode...

Start(button)
Programs
MS-DOS Prompt..

when at the prompt (flashing cursor in black screen) type
scanreg /restore and then hit enter
pick a date the furthest back from today and if that fails keep
trying other dates.

Spider - Thanks for the tip, but I had already tried that. As I stated in my initial message, all my backup registries where corrupt. Finally did one thing that got my computer back to regular mode. I started the system using the feature after holding down the "Ctrl" key at initial startup and selecting the startup of each system at a time. As a wild hunch I did not start any of the Symantec programs and that did the trick for the meantime.
