OK, so I installed Ubuntu 7.04 x86 a few days ago for a friend, dual booted with Windows XP. This computer has an nVidia GeForce 8800GTS

OK, so I tried to install the drivers for it, got the latest one from nVidia's website (http://www.nvidia.com/object/Linux_display_ia32_100.14.11.html)

Here are the steps I took:

download the latest driver to the desktop
get into command line mode
stop the x server
CD to the desktop
sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run
it goes through the install after compiling the driver
it also configures the xorg.conf file for me
I start the x server, get an error (see below)
I reboot the computer
I get an error, I go back into command line and attempt the start the x server, error again
I configure the xorg.conf my hand
I start the x server again, same error
edit, start x server, error, repeat
nvidia made a backup of the original driver, I make the backup the usable one
start the x server, yay it works....without the nvidia driver running
and at last, I repeat all of this with the same results

So, how can I get the driver working and the xorg.conf file configured properly?

Also when I click the shutdown button in Ubuntu, there is no shutdown or reboot buttons....and if I click log off, it goes to command line

I'm still not exactly a Linux expert, so some explanations and step by steps would be appreciated

Here is the error I get when I attempt to start the xserver:
failed to initialize nvidia kernel module
screens found, but none have a usable configuration
XIO: fatal IO error104 [connection reset by peer] on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining
