Reading Vista backup from XP

Does anyone know if it's possible (and if so, how) to read vista backup from XP.
I've got 2 machines, 1 Vista and 1 XP, my Vista machine has gone back for repair but i need some important data off it. I back it up using the backup util to an external drive and wondered if i can restore what i need from it onto my XP machine.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Sorry Lubricant_Larry but Windows Vista's Backup and Restore tools are completely different from the Backup program that came with Windows XP and so the backup files are not compatible.

There is a utility that will restore XP backups to Vista though for those that might be interested. See here.
