I want to rebuild my wife's PC. When purchased S/H it had W98 installed but no CDs.
I have both W98SE and WME but both were purchased as upgrades for my own PC. I remember that during the install process Windows checks for a previous version before allowing the upgrade to continue. I also remember that it's only necessary to have the floppy or CD ready to insert when asked, it's not necessary to actually have the version installed.
I have a Windows 3.1 floppy, could I use that to "fool" Windows to allow the upgrade to continue? Is there an alternative method, if so, can anyone give me details?
In case you wonder, I have to rebuild the HDD because when the previous owner had the system it was networked and the IRQ for LPT1 has been taken for another device so I can't print off the machine and I can't move any devices as all the IRQs are taken.
