Wireless connectivity
Obviously, I'm new at this.
Attempts to get my USB wireless 802.11g adaptor hooked up to Ubuntu 7.04 failed. Ubuntu did not even recognize it was there (as opposed to Arklinux which saw it, but would not drive it and gave a "disabled" status for it) and did not give me any chance to install it. So I'm stuck. I know the device works just fine. It worked fine on the same computer when I had Windows 98 on there last week. Any ideas for how I get this to work, recalling that I don't know any of the commands or how to tinker with settings or anything else for that matter? Thanks. |

I'm giving you a link to the Ubuntu beginners forum. They're some Ubuntu gurus there that should be able to help you get your wireless connection going. It's a known issue with Ubuntu.

Wireless adaptor
It's not a card, it's a USB adaptor, basically an antenna the shape and size of a Bic lighter. I have it out, there are several numbers on it without description as to whether they are S/N's or Model Nos., and no brand name, though I think it is Riland or Riwand or something like that. I plugged it in here at work (no connection where the target computer is) and got a blank on the brand name.
Thanks anyway. |

In linux, open a terminal window, and plug in your "USB adapter", wireless card. Become root (su) and run the command "lspci -vv". Post the output here. *note: If you're using ubuntu, do not run "su", run "sudo lspci -vv".

in Arklinux, it was "command not found."
In Ubunto, it was about 80 lines of gibberish, with no mention of the wifi. |

In Arklinux, run "su" to become root. Then run "lspci -vv". In Ubuntu, run "sudo lspci -vv". Please post the 80+ lines of gibberish here (preferrably from Ubuntu, but either system will work). Also, please ensure the wireless card is plugged into the computer before you run any commands.

Did you have the wireless card (USB adapter) plugged in when you ran lspci? I see your network adapater (10/100), your modem, your sound card, your video card, and lots of other motherboard related items, but what I do not see is your wireless card.

I was on the Ubuntu forum site during the day, and found out that the Ralink card (no brand name on the unit itself or on the installation CD that came with it, the packaging long gone) could be Asustek, but I'm not really sure what that means. There was a lot of material on how to install Ralink model 25xx devices, but the only number I had on the unit with that number of digits was in the 3000's, and even the Ralink site had no mention of it. There were also extensive instructions on installing Wireless stuff on the Ubuntu site, which started with configure this or compile that and ndiswrapper some other thing, with no explanation of what that means or how you exactly accomplish that. It was all many levels above me. There was also some instruction about "disabled" cards, but the advice was basically try every combination of function keys you can think of, and let us know when it is enabled. So I am still without a connection there, and no real good handle on how to get going on line. Quote:
