View Full Version : Router screwed my PC, totally confused

Been running my new build with windows 2K for a couple of months now and it's been quite stable. We just got a new laptop and we're trying to figure out the best way to get both computers online, so we just bought a Linksys Broadband wireless router. We plug the motorola surboard cable modem into the router, and then connect with the laptop wirelessly. Then I try plugging the PC into the router with a stadard modem cable. I tried connecting to the internet with the PC but no luck, so I figure I'll restart and maybe have to change the connection settings. So I restart and try to start up explorer... and it loads for a bit and nothing happens. I go to control panel and click on network and connections, and nothing happens. So I restart the computer, and then I notice there is an icon missing from my system tray, the catalyst control centre (the drivers/software that comes with my GPU). And now I can't do anything on the computer. I can't start any programmes or even open folders. I've restarted many times, with "Last known good configuration" and still nothing works. Safe Mode does work, but that's no use to me.
I looked in the Task Manager processes list and see that some of the basic programs are listed twice, or using excessive amounts of RAM, like svhost using 64K. I looked up all the items I didn't recognise (unfortunately I'm not too familiar with the list on my relatively new PC, so I'm not sure if anything doesn't belong) but of all the items I didn't know the only one I can identify as possibly problematic is atkkbservice.exe.
So, basically I'm screwed. I'm totally perplexed as to how simply connecting to a router could cause this kind of problem, and obviously I have very few options for dealing with it. Thank god we go the internet working on the laptop so I can come here and ask for help. Please give me any help or advice you have, as my PC is worthless right now.
Thanks.

Do you have an Asus keyboard? I did a quick search using Dogpile and that was the result that came up many times.

No,the keyboard isn't ASUS. The problem is solved now, the computer righted itself overnight somehow. Then I tried again and screwed it again... and fixed it with a repair install. So I don't dare connect the router and PC physically again, so I'll have to figure out some other way to connect PC laptop simultaneously.
Thanks for the help

usually when u connect a new router to a pc after haveing a cable modem it can cause a bit of problems i know mine did some of the same things. u won't be able to get internet working through router till u do the routers setup in the manual it should say what the routers ip address is. u type that into the web browser and access the routers options and it should have a setup wizard or a setup option which u have to do in order for the router to even detect that its connected to pc . if u haven't done that already.

I've had cable for years and never have had to do that. I have never used the setup wizard before or any software that has come with a router before.

Usually after disconnecting a computer from a cable modem you need to do 1 of 2 things.

1. Power cycle the router and then connect the router to the cable modem thus registering its MAC address with the cable company.

2 Disconnect the computer from the cable modem. Hook up the router to the cable modem. Enter the router's setup screen and clone the computers MAC address.

I've only had one router before that was wireless that needed to do that to find wan and in the manual it says to do the setup wizard for it. and also to do home network setup in windows to have it connect through hub setup instead of directly to internet may of just been my router
