Go to start / programs / accessories / system tools / system information

When the system information window pops up;

go to tools and then click on the regfix or something like that.

*I'm doing this from memory since I am infront of an XP box.

Theoran's blessed with a great memory , you have to choose "Registry Checker" from the Tools menu.

Anyway, here's yet another suggestion:

Press F8 when the computer starts up and choose "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only" from the Boot Options Menu.

Type "cd Windows\Command" at the C: prompt and press the Return key. This assumes that "C:\Windows" is your default Windows 98 directory. If not, replace "Windows" with the name of your Windows 98 directory.

Now, type "scanreg /fix" and press the Return key.

This might resolve the problem.

You didn't say how long this has been going on, but rather than '/fix', try '/restore'. This will present you with 5 previous (hopefully sucessful) boot dates. Pick one, OK a few times, and see what happens after you reboot.

As a network engineer, I run into this issue quite a bit. First of all, are you running an Athlon processor? If so, make sure you have at least a 400w power supply. Athlons are notarious power eaters - especially the Thunderbird chips. A weaker power supply will not send enough power through your ram chips during boot up, this will cause some registry entries to dump during boot up and results in the errors you are seeing. If your power supply is strong enough, then you need to check your RAM. If you have more than one stick of memory, try removing all but one and restart. Keep swapping the memory until you isolate the bad chip(s). If you only have one chip, borrow one from a friend for a couple hours and rule out your memory problem.
Lastly, if you found your self stuck in a registry loop (error-restart-error-restart-etc) you might have written a bad backup over your only god back-up. This might be a good time to back up your personal files and do a clean install of the whole hard drive again. Good Luck.
