My nearly 4 year-old laptop's HD has expired! Just ordered a Dell Latitude w/ Vista w/ my son's help (he's a network manager so got a 25% OFF deal) - I'm a Norton user from way back but now HATE their BLOATWARE - seems to just slow down the computer!

Son recommends just using the VISTA options w/ the 'free' AVG anti-virus - certainly an inexpensive route - I know that VISTA's firewall is not setup (i.e. default) for outgoing problems, but I would like to know if this combo is adequate or whether other sofware should be added?

The new Dell @ home will be 'wireless' w/ a Linksys router, but this computer will go 'on the road' connecting w/ networks that are pretty 'open' - any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, as usual -

In my opinion:
Firewalls Zone Alarm
Suites: Kaspersky or Eset Security
Antivirus NOD 32 or Kaspersky
Spywre: Spyware Blaster, Spyware Doctor, Spyware Sweeper. Spybot S & D

I have been running Trend's PC-Cillan Internet Security for about 3 years now and find it great....it has anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware....also run other ant-spyware as back.

Renewed PC-Cillan for 2 years recently and got a great discount.
