boot off usb (moved from Vista Forum by AM)

I followed the instructions here to boot off a usb drive with Knoppix http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/01...b-knoppix-510/

I have a Memorex 2GB usb drive. I did exactly as told without error messages. Problem is, still not booting off usb.

I have a Sony VGN-FE770G with Bios version R0160J3 / Notebios 4.0 Release 6.1

I have only 4 options in bios boot order:

optical drive
internal hard drive
network
floppy

I tried ALL of these, still did not work. There is no actual usb option in my bios. My bios is pretty lame unfortunately, not much options at all.

This is a screenshot of the G: (USB) main root folder

I hope you can help. Also, USB originally formatted in FAT mode as well.

I think booting off a USB might be useless.

Burn the contents from the USB drive to a CD-R or CD-RW, and try to boot from a CD-ROM. Not enough room to fit the contents to the CD? Try a DVD+/-R or DVD+/-RW disc

Not all USB drives can be booted from. If I remember correctly San Disk drives can be made bootable. Read more here:

Most older system BIOS (older then 2004, roughly) will not be able to boot from usb media. Even some new systems cannot. Since you only have the 4 options, and usb is not one of them, you won't be able to boot a usb drive no matter how much you struggle.

Your best bet is to use a bootable CD or DVD, as rynprov suggested.

I agree, unless your bios specifically says removeable or usb disk, then you will not be able to.
