Recently, i have been going through problems trying to install a game that I downloaded via internet. I never got any problems installing this game before. Once it starts installing, It goes on for a couple of seconds and than an error message would pop up.

I would really appreciate it if anyone can help me resolve this issue.

Note: I have re-downloaded this program numerous times and still have the same issue.

Hi Kevin. Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301) and use it to remove all MapleStory entries.

Next boot into Safe Mode (restart your computer and tap F8 continuously as it restarts) and navigate to C:\Program Files and delete the MapleStory folder if it exists. Reboot and try reinstalling it now.

Thanks Ann, but the cleanup utility detected no maplestory content. In safe mode, maplestory wasn't in my C:/ drive cause i never installed it. i un-installed the first one cause it had some issues. Is there another way i can install this successfully?

I see. I know you tried downloading the file again but it wouldnt hurt to try another site. Try downloading the full version from here (http://www.maplesea.com/guide/download.aspx) and see if it makes any difference when you install it.

If you still have problems, let's see if there are any folders leftover from your previous uninstall.

Hit the Windows key plus r and and type:

cmd.exe

and ok. Copy and paste the below string after the prompt > and hit Enter.

dir /s /a "c:\maple*.*" > c:\find.txt & start notepad c:\find.txt

Your drive will be scanned and when finished, Notepad will pop up with some information.

Ok so i tried downloading the client from a different site. The installer came up with yet another error
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v726/hyperXaznboii/Untitled2.jpg

And for the command prompt, it said it found no entries of any maplestory content as well.
I'm guessing there is something wrong with my computer?

Note: 3 days ago, i reinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium and deleted everything from the older version. My computer came with a vista disc when i bought it.

Hmmm, it might be a problem with your drive.

3 days ago, i reinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium

Why did you reinstall Vista?

KevinT

Well, before i reinstalled windows, this problem was already there. My cousin said to reinstall windows and try. Seeing as i don't really have much on my computer anyways, i reinstalled windows and the problem is still there.

Are you having any other problems?

When you reinstalled Vista, did you also go to Windows Update and download all updates? If not, do so, reboot and see if this makes any difference.

My computer is currently up to date. All updates have been successfully installed.

Ok, well let's make sure that there are no problems with your file system.

Schedule a full chkdsk. To do this, open My Computer, rightclick on your drive and select Properties > Tools. Look for Error Checking and click "Check Now". Select both "Automatically fix file system errors" and the "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" options and click Start.

You will get a warning that Windows can't complete the tests until you reboot so reboot and chkdsk will start.

You can view the log in Event Viewer. Hit the Windows key plus r and type:

eventvwr.msc

and ok. Click on Windows Logs > Application and look for wininit. Doubleclick to open and you should see the results.

Once again, i want to thank you for your help.
There was a problem in the chkdsk. Apparantley, it freezes at step 4/5:
ChkDsk is verifying file data (stage 4/5)
13% complete (425 of 129712 files processed)
It stops there and doesnt move. Could this be related to my installation issues?

How long did you wait for it to complete Kevin? Stages 4 & 5 are a lot slower than 1 to 3.

Give it another try, did the same thing happen? Check to see if a log has been created and if so post the results here.

A google search reveals that a lot of people have had this problem with this particular program. See the FAQ here (http://forum.nexon.net/MapleStory/forums/thread/128787.aspx).

You could try disabling all security software such as Window Defender, your AntiVirus Program and any AntiSpyware utilties and try downloading and installing it again. If this doesnt help, I'm out of ideas I'm afraid Kevin. It looks like this is a known issue with this program and not Vista related.

Ok Thanks for all your help Ann. I really appreciate your time trying to aid me in fixing this problem

AnnMarie

Kevin I have done some more research and discovered that your error message is generated by the Windows Installer, see here (http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q110742).

Part of the problem may be that MapleStory is not yet Vista compatible however it could also just be straight out file corruption caused by interference during the download. Did you try my earlier suggestion of disabling all security software before downloading the file? Also make sure you dont use a download manager.

If the latter is true, a workaround could be to download the file to another computer (friends), copy it across to yours and try installing it now.

KevinT
October 3rd, 2007, 07:47 AM
Well i tried downloading it again without any security software and still error. What I'm no so sure of is what do you mean by download manager? I used Firefox to download the installer.

AnnMarie
October 3rd, 2007, 08:04 AM
That's fine. A download manager is a program that traditionally speeds up downloads although they can cause problems.

Have you tried my second suggestion?

KevinT
October 3rd, 2007, 08:57 AM
Ok. For your second suggestion, my cousin has it working fine on his computer. Do i get his installer or all the files that were extracted from the installation?

AnnMarie
October 3rd, 2007, 10:34 PM
Just the Installer (the file downloaded).
