I have a problem here in Spain - friends trying to connect to the internet. Everything was OK. They could dial up with laptop or desktop, one at a time using just one cable. After a storm neither would connect, the laptop was connected at the time, not dialed in but hardware set up.

Both machines show that the modems is ok but do not find a dial tone. My laptop connects first time everytime so it's not the cables or the junction box.

The laptop is running on windows 2000 the desktop on XP. Both modems connect via com 3 which I cannot find in Device manager if this is of any help.

Any thoughts anyone???
:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Does anyone think it may be worth trying a new modem?? Although the modems show as OK, I cannot think what else it could be.

I had that same problem after a storm,everything said ok but it wouldn't work. Since a new modem wasn't expensive I got another one and that fixed the problem.Should work for you unless something else fried.

The problem with uninstalling the drivers is that both machines are very old (one is 10 years) so I doubt they have the original software to reinstall the drivers and as the cannot connect to the internet it cant' be done online. I think I will suggest a new modem.

since you are online now, you can download the drivers to a disk, usb drive, cd or whatever and install them on the old machines. Drivers may still be available so if you would tell us what modem you have someone here may be able to help you find it.

Do you have the os cds? You should have original operating system cd for the 10 year old computer since neither 2000 or xp was out 10 years ago. For that computer, you could delete the modem driver, reboot, it should ask for operating system cd, insert it and it should load a driver for your modem.
