What renegade was asking is whether the Run window will open at all or whether it opens but closes as soon as you type something or closes when you type something and then click OK.

Ok, like when i click on run it comes up. When I type in say msconfig, it gets a pop up error box. Cant give you the exact error this second because its my work computer. Kinda stinks. It has alot of stuff on its startup but cant remove them due to this.

Can you open the Control Panel? If you go to the Run box, type regedit and click OK, will the Registry Editor open? If neither of those will open either, the two most likely causes are your employer or the IT department at work has disabled access to all three or the computer is infected with malware. Both spyware and viruses like to disable those three things because those are places where you can disable/eliminate malware.

ok did it at work. it says msconfig is not recognized as an internal or external command. Although if you type in run cmd it does pull up command prompt. I did a chkdsk and it sayd to do a chkdsk with /f to fix. and it says chkdsk/f is access denied. So i did a hjk this for you to check for bugs.

Hi wentreefgirl,

This would be the reason that msconfig is not recognized, as it is not a file that is native to Windows 2000. You can download and install the XP version of msconfig and it will work in Windows 2000. w1che has provided you with a link from where you can download msconfig.

I must have been creating my initial response when you posted the info about your operating system.

I would also recommend posting your HJT log in the Cyber Safety forum, as I am no expert at analyzing logs, but I can see at least one item that may be problematic (i.e., O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'c:\program files\newdotnet\newdotnet6_98.dll' missing)
