How Do I Access the Startup Programs?

I just started playing around with an old laptop I had at home that has Windows 2000 loaded on it. I want to turn off a bunch of programs that startup when I boot the laptop up. I know to type in "msconfig" at the Start -> Run window, but I get an error. Is there another way to access the startup window so I can de-select the programs that I don't need to startup everytime I turn the laptop on? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time!

Hi manooly,

msconfig is not native to WIN2K, that's why you're getting an error message when you try to run it. XP's msconfig.exe will work with WIN2K, so if you have access to an XP rig, you could copy the msconfig.exe file from the XP rig to the 2K one. Another option would be to download XP's msconfig.exe file. Here is one site from whence you could download the file.

So, there is no way to turn off what is to be started each time you boot up in Windows 2000? Hmmm, I thought there was an option, just not msconfig. Do you know any other way to turn off some programs that are turned on each time I boot up in Windows 2000?

Well, that would depend on where they are being called from. The most common place is in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce

They could also be called from the Startup folder, for example:
Documents and Settings\<Username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

First, check out this MS KB Article, which might provide some assistance; also, see my post in your other thread on the same topic - try using the 'Computer Management' module in W2K - have not worked w/ that OS for several years, so don't remember all of its features.

Finally, PC Mag has a new version of their Startup Cop Pro 3 which apparently works w/ a variety of MS OSs - check HERE, if interested - it's an $8 download, and I've used only the older version - good luck again!

Download CCleaner free from http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/. This program is a registry cleaner, a junk file cleaner and also shows and allows you to delete your startup items. i have Windows 2000 and this is what i use.
