Strange Problem
I'm preparing to install a new hard drive for Ubuntu V 7.04. So I proceeded to backup all important data on the drive I'm replacing to an external hard drive. I thought my data would be easily accessible from my other drive with Ubuntu V. 6.06(Dapper drake) on it. Much to my surprise when I booted to the drive with Dapper on it my data from Fiesty does not show on the external drive. The procedure I used to transfer data from Fiesty to the external drive was to copy/paste from my home folder to the external drive. The external drive was formatted FAT 32. I also store data from my Windows drive on it. All data that I had previously stored on the external drive shows up. Just the last stuff I copied doesn't show when I'm on Dapper. I hope I've explained this well enough.
![]() Any idea why the data from Fiesty doesn't show on the external drive when using Dapper? Could it be the method I used to move it(copy/paste)? It shows when I'm using the Fiesty drive. Reason for changing out the hard drive: Drive is getting noisy and I think it's failing.

Curious. You can see the data you copied to the external drive using the Fiesty machine, but not the Dapper machine, correct? Can you see the data using a Windows machine?

Nope, can't see it with Windows either. Strange isn't. The data I want to save is mostly .jpg files. I also have a Iomega zip drive hooked up via USB. I copied the data from Fiesty to that and have on problem seeing it from the other drives. A bit about my system: I'm using a Trios hard drive selector switch to select between my three hard drives. These switches are no longer manufactured, but you can still find them(eBay). http://cgi.ebay.com/Romtec-Trios-RX9...QQcmdZViewItem The switch has worked extremely well for me for several years now. The external drive is detected by all hard drives and data stored on the drive previously from Fiesty, Dapper and Windows is seen from all hard drives. Just the last data stored from Fiesty is not readable from the other two drives. Confusing isn't it. At any rate; I've got the data stored on a zip disk, so nothing can be lost when I change out the failing drive. I'm limping along with the Fiesty drive waiting for the new release of Ubuntu to come out (in just a few days now I think). Then I'll D/L an ISO and install my new drive, then install the latest version of Ubuntu on it. I'm sure I'll be back with question when I get the new install done.

I'm wondering...the directory in which you mount the usb drive, check it when nothing is mounted. Does it contain any data at all with nothing mounted?

OK, I think I've found the problem. In my home folder>file system>Fat_files(name of external drive) I can only see the older files in the folder. Under permissions it states that the file is owned by Root and I can't change permissions. How to I change the permissions to allow users to see the files? Thanks.
