Hope I posted this thread in the proper place. My Media Player 9 stopped playing avi files. If I go to play an avi file, the following error message appears: "Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows". This only applies to avi files. I have no other media player or devices installed. This is what I have attempted so far with no success:
1. Uninstall/reinstall Media Player 9.
2. Went to Windows Update and downloaded all updates and hotfixes.
3. Downloaded the latest version of direct-x.
4. Did a repair of Internet Explorer.
5. Ran chkdsk. No errors.
6. Ran all my spyware and cleanup programs.
I am really stuck and have run out of options. If someone can bail me out here I will be truly grateful. Thank you.

Try re-registering the dll's. Just follow the instructions.
1. Open a command prompt window by clicking start/run, type in "cmd" (without quotes), and press enter.
2. Type in "cd \" (again without the quotes), press enter.
3. Type in "Dir *.dll /s /b > regdll.bat" (without quotes).
(this lists all the dll's on the system and puts them in a file called regdll.bat)
4. Type in "notepad regdll.bat" This will open the file you just created in
notepad)
5. Use the replace command (under the edit menu) to search for "C:\" and replace it with this string: c:\windows\system32\regsvr32.exe /s c:\
(make sure you type this in correctly or it won't work)In the case of windows 2000, the path should be changed to read c:\winnt\system32\regsvr32.exe /s c:\
6. Use replace all to make changes to the whole file.
7. When your done with that, save the file and close notepad and return to the command window.
8. type in regdll.bat press enter. let it run. (it may take a few minutes)

Did exactly as you said and the process finished normally. Tested an avi file and it still didn't work. Now I have a much bigger problem. I tried going into my Outlook Express to send you the results. None of my saved inbox messages will open. The hour glass icon appears and the email will not open. I am sending this message on another computer. Please help me fix my main computer. I'm dead without it. Please respond as quickly as possible. Thanks.

My OS was in too big of a mess to try and correct my Outlook Express inbox and the avi files. This morning I ran a Windows 2000 repair and I am now back to normal. I have no idea what caused the problem and quite frankly I don't really care. This is my first totally successful repair of a w2k OS. In any event please close this thread. Thanks.
