Hey everyone
I have been messing around with the permissions of some files (can't remember which) and after a reboot, I can't go any further past a certain point. I am running Ubuntu Feisty. Basically, what happens is that all the text-boot stuff etc. comes up, and after that is done, my nVidia logo pops up, and all I get after that is a black screen with the loading cursor. I can move the cursor around, but can't do anything else. There is nothing out of the ordinary in Virtual session 1, and I can't seem to be able to do anything. That is why you shouldn't mess with system permission settings.
Boot your system in fail safe mode, it should be the second or third option on the grub bootloader. Let me know if any error messages appear.

Recovery mode works fine. No error messages. I think the problem may be to do with GNOME, I'm not sure.

I once again fixed my own problem. What I did was change the permissions of /usr/lib, /usr/bin, and a few others to 755 using chmod in recovery mode. At last I was able to boot. Sure, sudo wasn't working but this was fixed with a 'chmod 4755 /usr/bin/sudo'.
