Hello,
I have an Acer Aspire 3100 Laptop that I want to install Linux on. I currently am running a dual boot of both Xp and Ubuntu. I want windows completely gone and have only one partition on the laptop containing only Linux. Whenever I try and boot with a Linux cd inside the laptop, trying to boot off of it, it gives me a memory error and says I have to reboot immediately. Any suggestions how I can get erase the windows and current Ubuntu partitions and have a clean install of linux on my laptop?

You could try gparted which is a live cd,it allows you to partition your hard drive create and destroy partitions. You can download it here http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=gparted
If you have a spare cd you can burn it on to it might work.

My flaming keyboard is a pain in the neck i was just about to add something and the letter "g" suddenly became the "enter" key lol
Is the cd you are trying to use definately a good copy?

Yea, I cant see why the cd's would be bad. I tried to run the gparted cd, but nothing happened. I switched the boot to boot from the cd drive first and the same error that I get when I run the linux cd's came on. Heres what the msg said:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
the system memory manager (emm386.exe) has detected an error caused by a fault in one of the device
drivers or programs loaded in the system.
due to this fault the system is probably in an unstable state, and you are therefore recommended to
reboot the computer immediately. if the problem persists, then try to isolate which program is at
fault (if you have loaded several, then load them one at a time until the fault appears), then
contact the technical support department for that program

Hi so just tell me did you burn the linux cd's yourself if so did you burn them using windows or linux software. Can you test the cd's on another comp you may have or maybe a friends computer, just to rule out a bad copy of the cd.You say you allready have it set in your bios to boot from cd.Maybe try disconnecting any other hardware you may have connected to your laptop.I do not really understand why you would get this error. The laptop is supposed to be booting from cd so to get an ".exe" error message it seems to me that is windows. In which case it brings me back to the bad cd option.Thats why i think you should get to try your cd on another comp.
