If you are using the GUI version of the program, you will probably be able to cut a significant amount of time from the overall time if you switch to the CLI version. That version can be download here:

i386-winnt-cmdline.exe (http://wcarchive.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome-3.08.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe)

A very nice and easy way to manage the client is through the Seti Driver program, which you can get here:

Seti Driver (http://www.wakeassoc.com/setidriver/)

With the Seti Driver program you can manage a number of units within a cache that you can set to whatever amount you want. If your computer is doing about 10 work units a day, then set it to about 12 and so forth.

If you want to setup the Seti Driver program to run at bootup, then just create a shortcut into the individual users Startup folder for Windows 2K/XP systems or the startup folder for Windows 9x systems. Right click on the shortcut, select properties and set the Run: pull down menu to Minimized.

Hope this helps.

How do I start the command line client to run minimized, in other words I don't want to "see" it. I have taken your suggestion PostCode and installed both the command line client and Seti Driver

PostCode
May 25th, 2003, 10:49 PM
Let Seti Driver run it. Near the top of the Seti Driver client you will see the option to "Hide Processing". Make sure you check that. Also, make sure htat the option to Display Transmit is unchecked, else the window displaying the transmit will come up on every work unit you send/recieve.

Hope that solves your problem. :)

If you use the 3.08 client your times will be about an hour or so longer, depending on the system specifications and so forth. I have the older 3.03 client still and use it, but unless your behind a firewall, I don't recommend using it. If you can't get it let me know and I'll email you a copy.

tramtwo
May 26th, 2003, 12:56 AM
Ok I've got it sorted thanks PostCode. Are you saying that the cmd line client is slower than the GUI verson? The client that I am running now is the one you provided a link to above. I am behind a firewall. ;)

PostCode
May 26th, 2003, 12:58 AM
No, the older 3.03 cli client is faster than the new 3.08 one.the GUI client will take forever regardless of the system you have.

tramtwo
May 26th, 2003, 04:19 AM
Thanks PostCode. The GUI was returnig results about every 5 hours 50 minutes. The 3.08 version is going to take about 5 hours 34 minutes. If you'll send me the 3.03 version I'll give it a go. :D

I've started back up again - had temporary disruption due to our recent house move

Hey MishY why are you always doing things the hard way?
Here in the US we move and most times leave the house where it is. :p

Main Seti@home Page (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/)

SETI@home is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data.

Individual User Statistics (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/individual.html)

*The account information includes, among other things:
*The number of results you have complete
*The total amount of time you have spent processing data for SETI@home
*What groups you have founded
*Which group you are currently a member of
*Details about significant signals found in the results

Very interesting stuff here. Best as I can tell they are not associated with the Seti@home project.

The mission of the SETI Institute is to explore, understand and explain the origin, nature and prevalence of life in the universe.

Armed with the results of 1.4 million years of computer time,
SETI@home scientists recently traveled to the Arecibo radio observatory
in Puerto Rico for a closer listen to our 155 top "candidates".
Thanks for participating in this history-making effort.
According to our records, you have processed 95 work units,
the most recent on June 2, 2003.
Your contribution of computer time to SETI@home is greatly appreciated.

Scientific News
---------------
On March 18, three SETI@home scientists (Paul Demorest, Eric Korpela,
and Dan Werthimer) traveled to the Arecibo observatory in Puerto Rico,
carrying a list of 300 "candidates" - points in the sky
where interesting signals were detected by SETI@home
not just once but several times over 4 years of observation.

We had been granted 24 hours of telescope time,
in three 8-hour periods on consecutive days.
An unexpected storm of solar flares cancelled
our 2nd and 3rd observing periods.
Fortunately, the observatory staff was able to shuffle the schedule and
we eventually observed for the full 24 hours.
In the end, we were able to re-observe 155 SETI@home candidates.
We also observed some other interesting places in the sky:
5 extrasolar planetary systems, 35 nearby Sun-like stars,
15 galaxies, and 6 targets from our companion project, SERENDIP.

These observations are of higher quality than usual, because
1) we used Arecibo's main antenna, the "Gregorian dome",
which has a narrower beam and greater sensitivity
than the receiver we normally use; and
2) we recorded in 8 bit per sample resolution in addition
to the usual 2 bit format.

We did a quick "on the fly" analysis of the data;
this didn't reveal any synthetic extraterrestrial signals.
The analysis of the 2-bit data will begin shortly,
using the regular SETI@home screensaver;
we're ironing out some problems with the pointing data.
The analysis of the 8-bit data will be done using a
new version of SETI@home which is under development,
and will be released later this summer.

The Planetary Society web site has an excellent summary of the reobservations:
http://planetary.org/stellarcountdown/index.html
Our web site lists the reobservation targets
and the 7,000 users whose computations directly contributed to finding them:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/candidates.html
A photo album from the trip is here:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/arecibo_2003/

Project News
------------
The reobservation project is a milestone for SETI@home
but it is not an stopping point.
In fact, the recent candidate list reflects only about half the
data we've analyzed so far, and we hope to have another reobservation
session next year.

Our current top priority is shifting SETI@home to use BOINC
(Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing).
BOINC will allow us to start analyzing the 8-bit data,
and we'll use it for 2-bit data as well.
This new version of SETI@home is still under development,
but a preview of its screensaver graphics is here:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/setiathome.jpg

We hope you're as excited as we are about our search for life outside Earth.
Thanks for your continued participation and support.

Well I'm up to 30 now, but if ya look, both AnnMarie and myself have many more hours than some, yet we are quite a ways behind others with less hours, I don't understand this. I ran what Postcode suggested to do, it opened up something in dos, maybe I didn't do it right!! :(

Download Version 3.08 of SETI@home for Windows (95/98/2000/NT/ME/XP).

tramtwo

It has to do with how fast your PC is and the amount of other programs you are running ect.

The command line client is a bit faster on this PC, not by much though. Dave if you install that one you won't see all the pretty colors.

You may want to check if you have yours set to run only when in screen saver mode. I allow seti to run in the backround the entire time.

AnnMarie

Dave, I'm running Seti on a 200mhz PC. It's an old one that I rescued from the junk heap and upgraded a bit. All it does at the moment is process Seti data :D :p

PostCode

You doing fine lufbra. The command line client is menat to run like that. If you don't want to see the box, then I suggest grabbing Seti Driver, the program I explained earlier, and use it to hide the client. The only thing you'll see is a little blue or yellow dish in your taskbar.
