Drivers for PB sound card/modem

Hey there,

I am hoping this is the right place for this......

I have just, after a major battle, reinstalled win98se on a friends computer. I need to reinstall the sound card/ modem (yup there in the same unit ;( )

I downloaded the correct driver & am now wondering if I have done it right. I have to use my computer to get this information & am wondering if

a, Can I download straight to a floppy disk
or
b, Can I download it to my desktop & then save it to the floppy.
or
c, Do I download it to my computer & create another folder for it & unzip it & then save it to the floppy
or
d, none of the above because I'm so far off the mark it isnt funny :P

The reason I ask this is, the program I downloaded is in zip form & I'm not sure how this translates to floppy & to a computer that has no unzipping tool on it as yet( I was hoping to just get these utilities once the other computer is connected to the net)

First, congrats on the success!!

I guess this is the right place...........this forum's kinda like the 'junk closet'. Just toss it in here 'til we get it sorted out.

"C" sounds about right. However, the drivers may not fit onto a single floppy - hence their being compressed. If that's the case, simply put a 'zip' utility onto floppy, install in the PB, and go from there.

Hope this helps.

Hey zipulrich,

Thanks for that ......I found a utilities disk & was able to install Winzip & it let me get the driver onto the hdd.

Unfortunatly I must have the wrong driver as the sound card/modem driver wasnt found .........Ahhhhhh the dramas of this little project.

I got the driver in another thread in here & the name of the devices were exactly the same ............

Any other hints ???????

OK I now have the right driver ........the install instructions have got me stumped.....

they are as follows :
Install the .inf in c \windows\options\cabs and also snd4eur.cab. Remove the old modem from the control panel (important) and in the registry (regedit) remove the entries corresponding to AZT3013_DEV0004 (very important) Then restart your computer and that's right

It may be late here but I am unable to find the c:\windows\options\cabs folder

I have checked in the windows explorer & it must be hidden or are the directions wrong

Hi,
drivers installation can be a mess at times.
but, matter of fact, the extracted files can be put in any folder you want.

the options\cabs folder would not be on hard disk, because you either copied the cabinets to C:\win98, or ran setup from the CDROM itself

this just means that when windows is installing the driver, that you point it to the folder you put the extracted drivers in (with inf and snd4eur.cab, etc in it) and then point it to the win98 folder on the CDROM or hard disk
it may "forget" where the files was and you may need to again point to the folders.

you must have seen "have diskette" and "browse"
Well, this have diskette and browse process is tedious but it works.

can you tell me where you got the driver downloads so I can look at them readmees?
(I could not find out which ones you needed and where you get them?)

Hey jtdoom,

Fisrtly a huge thanks to you the pb hdd was beyond help so luckily I had this other hdd it is smaller but will allow my friend to at least have a computer again untill we can get another one.

I found the driver at

I have saved it to a file I called modem driver in the program files.

I have checked it this morning under the system properties in the control panel & highlighted the winmodem icon. There are no ! & I have checked the properties of this & under general it says this device is working, when I check the driver tab it says No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device. To update the driver click Update driver.

I did this & it tells me it has found the driver & it is the same one.

It also tells me there are no conflicts.

As this is a combined sound card/modem I have also checked the sound as well.......it gives me all the same info, as in it is all working properly.

I put in the 98se cd rom & tried to play one of the video clips & the media player came up & the video came up but a prompt came up saying that there was no sound device & the sound could not be played

Heres a further update.

I have looked into the system information & in the componants/Miscellaneous section I found the modem. It goes thru a heap of letter & numbers I really dont understand & at the end it comes to the drivers. Heres what I found

Driver: Winmodem\0000
Driver Date: 10-9-1997

Driver: atwpass.dll
file size:128976(0x1F7D0)
file date:10/3/1997 5.33pm

Driver: atwmodem.exe
File size: Driver not installed

Driver: atwmodem.drv
File size: Driver not installed

Would I be wrong in thinking that this may be the problem?????

When I have tried to have the computer detect the modem it comes up as no modem found & is trying to read a com port. With this being a sound card/modem combination I'm not sure what area it should be detected in if a port at all.

I have directed the installation to the folder that has these drivers in them but it doesnt seem to read it at all. It says the current driver is the most up to date one and wont let me use these two files.

The sound card is reading as detected & running OK but I have no sound from it either.

Yet another update

I gave up on that driver & found another one that was for this model soundcard/modem. After a bit of mucking around I finally got it to load & the computer now reconises the modem & sound card. That is in theory & it all according to the compters diagnostics & in the system properties it is working.

Alas when I tried to connect to the internet it says 'No dial tone check to see if the modem is correctly connnected & the phone line is plugged in'

I know it all is & I know the phone line isnt faulty as this is the line I am on now.

Could the sound card/ modem but buggered even though it was working right up till the last minute I turned it off to do this upgrade or have I just missed a tick somewhere???????

When I plug the speakers in there is no sound & when I tried to run a video of the win98se disk it said there was no audio present but it did still play the video.

I am yet again at a loss

Yet another update,

I have been able to get the computer to reconise the modem...yayyyy

This time it actually comes up as a modem & not just in the winmodem.

In theory, the computer says everything is fine & working properly.....

In practise it isnt

When I try to connect to the internet it trys to dial & immediatly says there is no dial tone check the phone line......This is within milli seconds of hitting the connect button.

I have tried diffrent drivers .......there seems to be a million if them for this 1 particular soundcard/modem & this is the furtherest I have gotten.

The guy who owns the computer has taken it home & has a realtive staying for Easter & apparently hes some computer wizz....although he spent most of the time yesterday on the phone with me trying to sort this out.

So I just wanted to say a huge heartfelt thanks to all of you who have helped me through this drama of mine

hi again

try the little program you find in wnmdmid.zip
unzip, and run the extracted proggy
this little program should identify the modem for you
