hi there

i'm trying to set up my old computer (bought in 2002) for my girlfriend.

it has been sitting in my loft for almost two years now. I plugged everything into the monitor i used to use with it and it started up fine but when it got to the loading windows screen (black screen, windows logo, little loading bar at the bottom) it just switches to power saving mode.

Now i vaguely have some memory of something like this happening before which leads me to believe that the solution should be relatively simple.

I don't have a windows cd if that would help. Also how do i put it into safe mode? I used the monitor with another computer would i need to reset or change some of the settings on the monitor?

Thanks for any help, i really am not very good with computers. If you need any more info about specs and all that i should be able to provide it.

cheers carl

hi

when it powers up, please hit the key to enter BIOS (Delete, F1, F10, or whatever yours uses.), and check system date and time.

If it is way off, then you should replace the battery on the motherboard.
(Actually, after two years idleness, I would replace it as a preventive measure.)

hi thanks for the quick reply, if its is the battery where is the best place to get a replacement? And is it relatively straightforward to take out the old one and put in the new one myself. I have changed cd-rom drives and put in graphics cards, is it similar to that?

cheers

hi
CR2032 cellcoin batteries are sold at almost every supermarket (or mall)and shops where you get computers or photography equipment.

they are easily replaced. the cliphook holding them down is easily seen. gently press it outward, the old one pops up at a side (or pops out entirely), replace with new one, press it gently in.
