So.. I just formatted my computer. I hadn't formatted since I built it, and I figured it'd help speed some things up.
Well, as you expected, it didn't go so hot. I first installed Linspire (a linux thing) on the same drive, just to try it out..but it was horrible, so I wanted to go back to win2kpro. So I had win2k pro format it back to NTFS and install. No big deal.
Well, ever since I installed, things haven't worked right in the video department. I'm not exactly sure why, but for some reason, video related things don't work right all the time.
When I went to download all the win2k updates, the computer would always freeze whenever I was installing a directx update, or any type of windows media player or media update.
It'll hang when I go to shut down on a blank blue (desktop) screen..until I force it off with the power button.
Ati tool, which previously worked before format, says the "The Kernal mode Driver does not seem to be running", whatever that means.
My games freeze a lot. My computer was just hard locking while playing WoW. For some reason, windows couldn't find my monitor driver either.
Before I formatted, atitool worked fine, my comp knew what monitor i had, my game crashed a bit, but it'd never just lock up where i couldn't do anything. I swear the screen even looks different. Like, the windows text looks different.

Originally, when I installed the OS, I waited to install video drivers, because I wanted to try updated ones before the old ones. In the past, this has worked out bad, causing instability and such, but I figured I'd try some of these omega drivers for ati. I think I installed directx before having a video driver in too, because my mobo drivers wanted it or something. I don't know if that'd effect anything. I cleaned out the omega drivers, reinstalling the original drivers that came with my x800 xl, and i've got a little more stability..but still the hang when windows shuts down, CS:S is so screwed up still, number of issues with that..I just don't know. Could it be a screwed up win2k install for some reason? I think I have several disks, maybe the one i used is screwy or old or corrupt. I don't really know
