Question about ccSvcHst etc

I've been reading the several threads about the problems with NIS/NAV and ccSvchst.exe

I recently had problems using going back to a restore point and when that was resolved found that my NIS was corrupted. Then I started reading about the above problem and started investigating.

So...is it normal to have several identical copies of ccSvchst listed in Task Manager? And several copies of others like svchst.exe on of which is taking up 18,600k (by sysytem) is this normal?

Mike

Hi Mike. No, are you sure that they are all ccSvcHst.exe processes because Norton does load other processes such as ccApp.exe. If you are sure that the same process appears several times, I would uninstall Norton again, reboot and then go here and run the online Norton Removal Utility. It should get rid of Norton traces. Reinstall it now and reboot again. How many do you see now?

If you are referring to the below process:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

Yes, that's quite normal. See here for more information.

OK thanks AnnMarie for that. I eventually managed to uninstal NIS using the download tool as sugested and everything in that respect is resolved. I will reload the complete system tomorow I think taking into account the workarround for Norton mentioned on a the previous thread. Right now NIS is not reinstallled (yes I know..very dangerous!)

From what you and the MS link say several instances of svchost.exe in Task Manager are normal. However, one of them is quite large. Perhaps you could comment if the "extract" below looks normal to you.

Thanks, Mike

Windows XP SP2
IE7

svchost.exe System 4,444 k
" Local service 4,564 k
" Network service 3,404 k
" System 30,524k
" Network service 4,312 k
" System 5,160 k

Yep, that looks fairly normal to me Mike.

Wait until you get Vista. I just counted and I have twelve instances of svchost.exe in my running processes.
