n00b question about DVDs and Ubuntu

Hello everybody
I am running Ubuntu 7.10 and I want to burn an AVI file to a DVD that I can play on my DVD player. Are there any easy ways to do this?

It's my experience that an AVI file burned with Linux will not play in most DVD players. It will play using your movie player in Ubuntu, but not through a TV with your set top DVD player. I don't know if it's me or what. If it's me doing something wrong during the burn I would really like to know what I'm doing, but the ones I've made with Ubuntu will not play.
