View Full Version : VHS to DVD Question

A couple of days ago I was going through some old stuff and found some old VHS tapes. Some of them I could just buy the DVD of, but others I really can't because they were never released on DVD (old tv show episodes, family vids). So I figured it would be worth putting them on DVD, and I guess I need a video capture device to decode the video to MPEG-2 or another digital format. Can someone recommend a decent product (preferably an external device, because my pc doesn't have any room for another pci card) that I could buy? Thanks a lot! :)

vhs you bought from shop have copy protection on it, if you try to record it the sound becomes garbled and there is a white banner going across the image
so
for everything else
you will need a TV tuner
plug the vcr out into the TV tuner in and sound card in
then start up some recording program (usually given with the tv tuner)
and record
then burn to DVD
theres no fast way to record things, you need to go through each tape second by second

Thanks for your reply! It's actually not the copy-protected ones I'm worried about, because I can just buy them on DVD (better quality, plus the "extras"). It's the ones that were taped and I can't get anywhere that I want to convert.
Really, all I want to do is save the vids on my hdd, clean them up with movie editing software, add subtitles/chapters and then burn them on DVD. My pc doesn't have a tuner card, or any room for another pci card, and my laptop doesn't have video inputs. So I was looking for something external to hook up to my VCR + pc to just get it onto the hdd, but I want to know what everyone thinks would be the best hardware to use.
I found this (http://www.amazon.com/ADS-Tech-Xpress-Video-Converter/dp/B000DZDMB6/) on Amazon, but some of the reviews make it sound like it has a 50-50 chance of working well. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Wow, they mention the same product (ADS Tech xPress Video Converter) that I found on Amazon. So it must be pretty good then, if they recommend it?
