copy and paste problems, help please

I have xp and a logitech mouse that is several years old no ball, for some reason the copy function is all messed up, when I hold down right mouse side it is like it skips or turns everything blue then when I release it won't hold it for me , does that make sense? If I hold down too long it makes like a box with all these letters and other weird makings like it wants to delete only whats in that box. Also when I hold down right side to copy and try and cover what I need copied it moves my words around alot, like it puts whats on the bottom at the top, this thing has gone mad lol lol

I can click it to copy a line at a time but it is making me batty, could the settings be messed up, how do I fix this?

it works fine otherwise just the copy is messed up.

The easiest way to either confirm or eliminate the mouse as the problem is to try another mouse. You can get a cheap one to use, then if the mouse turns out not to be the problem, keep the cheap one around for a spare. I can almost guarantee that you'll use it eventually. ;)

I imagine there are always settings that can be messed up. I'm a great believer in trying the simplest things first. So I'd try swapping out the mouse. If that fixes things, the more involved...and often hazardous, usually aggravating...approach of "messing with settings" can be avoided. :)
