Dell Dimension 8400 Pentium 4 3 Gig HZ,
76.1 Gig HD (18.8 Gig Free Space); 1.5 Gig RAM
XP Pro Ver 2002 SP2
Office 2002 for Students and Teachers will current updates.
My outlook stopped functioning. It attempted to open and then showed the message that “it was closed improperly and that the Personal Folder was being checked” (a checking process with progress bar stared and completed) then the archive file was checked. It then opened briefly and then closed.
Repeated attempts were the same. Many re-boots didn’t help and then I also tried starting in Safe Mode. Also, did not help. I ran the MS Office fix and repair, on Excel, because I couldn’t open Outlook to run it on it, hoping it would correct any office file error. It completed successfully, however, w/o fixing the problem.
Your advice would very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Ray

as detect and repair did not work, have you tried reinstalling it?

I hesitated to do so as I didn't want to lose my data and couldn't find, via search, the location of my data file (*.pst). If I remove and re-install will it automaticly find the data file. I have a lot of email and contacts that I don't want to lose.

you wont lose any saved data... make a back up of all your data before reinstallation if you like...

I will try the remove and reinstall route. Do you know the data files for outlook are located? I was not able to find any .pst files on the hard drive. The scan, as I recall, didn’t cover hidden files or directories, might they have be hidden (I doubt it)?
I would like to be sure that I know where the data is before I start the process. Since I can’t open Outlook I can’t check its setup options to find the path(s) to the data, etc.
Please advise.
Thanks
Ray

I tried the uninstall of MS Office and then reinstalled it. The exact same thing happens. Outlook opens up but then after a few seconds it closes. This is true if I start Outlook in Safe Mode by holding the Cntl key or just normal opening. I did a reboot of the system and no change.
Outlook had been working for years on this PC. Periodically it would complain the it was closed improperly (not sure I could do that) and it would verify the Outlook and Archive data files and then open correctly.
The same thing happened this time, however, it not fixed and after much additional attempts at remedy.
Please advise on what makes sense. I really need to have Outlook operating.
Thanks,
Ray

Confirm that this is Office Outlook and not Outlook Express?
Have you applied any Office Updates recently?
