My computer won't completely update any programs!!!

My computer is sooo slow. I am trying to install DSL on the computer. The troubleshooting cd states that Internet Explorer 6.0 needs to be installed, BUT, everytime I attempt to run the Windows updates, it stops before completely installing-stating "close all programs and re-run".....THERE AREN'T ANY OTHER PROGRAMS RUNNING! Please Help. Also, I took the cpu to Staples to install Windows XP. The technician on site told me that my processor is running too slow and the XP can't be installed. How do I fix this problem? Do I have to, bottome line, purchase a whole new computer?
