Desktop vs laptop

Since I have been reading most of the posts in the forums I have noticed something very interesting and wondered if anyone else has noticed this. It seems as if the laptops are having more problems compared to the desktop systems. Is there something about laptops that makes them have more problems? I know that there are heat issues with them because of the lack of cooling and are more likely to be damaged since they are carried a round.
Just something that noticed while checking out the boards.

For those that have the right lifestyle laptops are excellent. In my experience, the problem is that many people buy laptops when a desktop would suit them far better, and then regret it.

Laptops initially were created for business use, traveling with a desktop is impossible. Now people buy them for their main computer and as MishY said, the situation would/should have been a desktop. Laptops were not made to be used daily, for hours on end. Stick with a desktop unless you need one for business and you travel a lot.

The new breed are called desktop replacements. Alot of them have better specs than a standard "home" PC.

PCW has just done a group test on a bunch of them.

This got the editors choice

I have both, a laptop for work and desktop for fun and thats the way I see them, have done for many years, dont think I could ever see the laptop as anything more than a work tool.

I personally like Desktops better cause they are generally more powerful, though all I have right now is a laptop. Though I don't really have any problems with it.

Maybe you should think about one of these

tough laptops!

Could a desktop survive these situations? 8)

I don't want to buy a laptop I just noticed like I said in my original post that it seems as if half if not more of the posts about problems with booting is laptops. I just noticed that while reading through the posts that more people are having problems with them.

I have never owned a laptop but would be, in my opinion, a lot more difficult for one to fix their own laptop as compared to desktop. As well as upgrade stuff.

I agree 100% beachbumfromoz. I wouldn't mind getting a hold of an old laptop just to take it a part to see how they have everything setup in them.

My 2 cents.
With a labtop or desktop,if you buy one (low end) and try to get it to do to much; you are going to have problems.
First ? you should ask yourself is; can the puter do what I want it to do and do it well.
A gamer on a low end: GOOD LUCK!

By their very nature, lappies cram a heck of a lot in to a small space. Many design sacrifices are made.

Use both in work, laptop for day to day admin nonsense, with the ability to take a load of synched files home, desktops for the real crunching and investigations.

Lappies break more for the reasons given above. For example: unlucky enough to spill liquid or drop crud in your keyboard? Desktop users just switch an £8 item, lappy users have to jump through hoops to get the damn thing out and (hopefuly) clean it, or worst case, spend £70 replacing kb.

Desktops are basicaly a big plenum chamber with some electronic bits in - they can hold quite a bit of fluff and debris and still function reasonably. Because of the tight tolerances inside a laptop case, they get quite upset when they ingest fluff/crud/muck.

On the whole, I'd say we get about three times the calls to lappies as compared to calls to desktops. The hardware on site is split approximately 15% lappies to 85% desktops inthe business. Nuff said.
