boot failure after failed auto update

Posting this for a friend of mine who doesn't have internet....

computer asked to install auto-updates when online at my house, clicked ok and left laptop. Friend then turned on computer again when not online and came up with vista screen and said configuring data. Took ages so did manual switch off and now windows won't boot. Is saying BATTC.SYS missing or corrupt, status 0xc0000221. I think maybe the laptop was attempting to update when it was switched off. She is running vista home basic and does not have a re-install disc. I have no other details at the moment hope someone can help as she uses the laptop for work!

Thanks alot

We cant help without the disk silvaa. It's needed to boot Vista and repair it. Your friend should get in touch with whoever she purchased the computer from and ask for the installation DVD.

Thanks for that AnnMarie she's going to try and get the disc. Just one more question (sorry) when she does get the disc to reinstall windows is she going to lose the data already on the hard drive? If this is the case is there anything to do to prevent this from happening?

Again many thanks for any help.

Once she has the disk she should be fine provided there are no hardware issues.

She shouldnt have to reinstall Vista. She can boot from the DVD and run Startup Repair or System Restore. Both of these methods will preserve her data. Failing that, she can replace the missing files from other locations on her drive or from the DVD using a command prompt. Post back here if you need more help with this once she has the DVD and is ready to go.

If the worst comes to the worst, she can open a command prompt and copy her important data to removable media. See here and here for more help.

This is very simular to the compbatt.sys error. I think you should follow these steps: http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/...d.php?t=167252
