A clear explanation of the problem you are having

What doesn't work?
When i try to plug my ADSL2+ modem into my netgear wireless router, my computer is connected to my wireless buti can't connect to the internet from my computer. It will also not work if i attempt to plug the modem into router, and then plug the router into the ethernet of computer

What does work?
Plugging my computer by ethernet into the modem works. Connecting to my wireless network works(as in, it says i'm connected to that wireless network, but i cannot access the internet)

What you've tried
factory reset of wireless router, firmware upgrade of router. This router has been plug and play in 3 different houses, ADSL & 2 cable providers, so i'm not sure what to do now?
A description of your network
ADSL2+ provider is TPG in brisbane, Australia
Modem is a Dynalink ADSL2+ modem router RTA1320
Router is a NETGEAR WGR614 v6, (latest firware installed)
Just my 1 computer
The OS(s) you are using
Windows XP (SP1, SP2)
What do you have for an IP address?
192.168.1.4
What is your default gateway?
192.168.1.1
Can you ping your default gateway?
yes, yes i canOne thing i did notice was that after the factory reset, i could access my netgear router setup page through internet explorer by typing 192.168.1.1 This is the same number i typed to configure my Dynalink ADSL2+ modem setup. Then, while in netgear router setup page, i plugged in the Modem, and setup page died.
Router setup page can only be accessed while modem is not plugged into router. Is it possible there is some kind of conflict between my router and modem? I'm a computer newb, but that's the best i've got.

Thanks for any help.

Ok in the Router Settings do you have it set to get the WAN address automatically? Or do you need to set it static? also what is the IP address of your router?

thanks for replying mate. I looked in the router settings and was not quite sure what things to write down, so i've taken some handy screen shots.

All these settings are current when the router is plugged into the computer via ethernet, and the internet is NOT connected to the router. I cannot get into the router settings if the internet is connected to the router, nor can i access the internet.

Thanks for your help so far, sorry about all the pictures, i hope they help in some way.

Yes I Seen something, Your Router is not getting a WAN IP address are you sure you pluged the cable from the modem to the router into the right port it is supposed to be in the WAN port.

That bit of info could be helpful...

What make and model modem are you using?
When you connect directly to the modem do you happen to get an IP address in the '192.168.1.x' subnet for your computer?

sorry i haven't been on for a while, thanks for taking an interest guys.

In answer to your questions Z1p:

Modem is a Dynalink ADSL2+ modem router RTA1320

And when i connect directly to the modem i get an IP address of 192.168.1.1

I still get the feeling there is some kind of conflict between the router and the modem, like they use the same IP address or something, but i'm too computer stupid to work out exactly what's going on. Any ideas?

bruxism, You are exactly correct. Both your router and modem are trying to setup a 192.168.1.0 subnet. You need to change the internal IP address of your router. On the LAN IP address change the IP address to 192.168.2.1. This should also cause the DHCP start and ending IP addresses. If they don't change automatically, change the third number in each to a 2 to match the routers new internal IP address.
