Kernal32 is your main Operating Sysytem, it's the part that does all the work. Since Internet Explorer and the Windows desktop are actually the same program, and error in IE will most likely cause a crash in your kernal. One way to avoid this from happening a lot is to make sure you have lots of free space, and remember to clean out your Temporary Internet Files folder Under c\windows. I suggest using Window Washer from Webroot.com.

Hi Stikboy, and thanks for the reply. I do, as you mentioned, delete temp int files often.( My machine isn't the greatest...lol!)
I actually just freed up almost 600 mb's of space. I have gotten these errors for quite some time now. Just getting more lately. Question... I ran "msconfig", read another post about same problem. I have things running that I have no clue about. I know the "systray... etc." but have others. In fact, have 2 of the same thing running("loadpwrprofile.." something like that) was wondering if it was cool to "uncheck" If you wouldn't mind, could I post my running apps? Thanks for your help!

hi this girl007

Darn good job cleaning out all that superfluous stuff.

Best bet with the 'Invalid Page Fault' in 'kernel32' and 'shell' error messages is to run Ad-aware.

Then run at least 2 independent antivirus scans, and a trojan scan.

It is as stikboy said, but sometimes a little different....and windows washer is good.

Hi Mike, and thanks for the reply. Already ran Ad-aware. Cleaned up there. And, tried to get "window washer" AGAIN, couldn't install, already had for trial.(tried to dl again too soon) Also, the only virus program I have is "Ontrack.. Fix-it" kind of a "all in one program" sure you are familiar with it. So, is there anything that you could suggest that I get. Unfortunatly, can't buy one right now. Also, what is a "trojan" scan? AND... the errors are happening alot more now. What the heck is going on? ANY thoughts would be helpful.

Hi, free antivirus:
AVG

AntiVir

Have a look ,down load and see which you prefer.

But when in doubt, always seek another antivirus scan as well, eg:
Housecall or the SOPHOS on line scanner.

Sorry i don`t have links for all, but Google will find them.

What version Internet Explorer.
Does it run OK or does it crash too.

Can you run the IE Repair Tool OK.

Can you run System File Checker tool:
Start-Run and type in:
SFC

... but be wary about what files you replace.

It`s probably better to run it , take note of any files reported, ...click on 'ignore' for each file, just to see first up what is reported.

Its possible it is missing system files, or IE files.

Hi Mike...
Well, I ran "sfc" and I got about 200 files that were reported as "changed", I ignored and wrote them all down. I have NO idea what is going on. BTW.. I just had to reinstall Win 98 for the 2nd time the other day. But not many of the files that came up were changed as of that date. HELP...
I am sending the list of files.. (sorry, its a long one)
Thank you so much for the help.... Im lost here.

Hi thisgirl007,
wow, you are good.
Thanks heaps for the list of files.

Re run SFC and click on "Update verification information " for each file..........(you can probably click on "Update verification information " for ALL files option)

Did the IE Repair Tool run OK?

Is it win 98 or 98SE .
And what version of Internet Explorer.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for getting back to me. Your great! First things first...
Im running Win98se(upgrade) I'm using IE6.
I have run the ie fix before, not too sure if it really works though. Actually, this is my 2nd install of IE6. Fix couldn't repair 1st install so I uninstalled and downloaded again. Always a new issue here. Also, I followed the link you sent for Housecall, didn't find anything. Guess thats a good thing . Going to sfc to update files. Still getting errors though.

Ok.. all updated. I ran msconfig, these are things that showed up... what can I uncheck? I didn't want to mess things up worse, thought I would ask first! Here are files in startup...
systray.exe
sm56hlpr.exe have no clue what this is
loadQM.exe
c:\windows\scanreg.exe/autorun no clue here
loadpwrprof ( Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll LoadCurrentPowerScheme)
Machine debug manager
THEN...check this out....
loadpwrprof.... AGAIN!
Is that weird? What should I do?
Thanks for all your help Mike!

systray.exe - Keep it
sm56hlpr.exe - Helper utility for Motorola based SM56 software modems - resides in the System Tray. Not required

loadQM.exe - Loads the MSN Explorer Query Manager - a waste of resources and bandwidth. Also installed by the latest version of MSN Messenger. Note that disabling this can sometimes prevent internet sharing working on Win2K Pro SP2. Reports also suggest that removing it will re-enable internet access - hence the "users choice" recommendation. If you have problems leave it, otherwise I recommend you disable it

c:\windows\scanreg.exe/autorun - Scans the system registry and makes back-ups at start-up. Important should the registry become corrupt. Keep it

loadpwrprof ( Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll LoadCurrentPowerScheme) - LoadPowerProfile shouold be there twice. This is be design. This behavior can occur because LoadPowerProfile is started twice to provide a power management profile before and after you log on to Windows. LoadPowerProfile starts as a machine service so that the default power management settings are available when Windows 98 starts. It is loaded again after you log on to Windows to process preferences for individual users of the computer.

Machine debug manager - Used by developers for debugging. You don't need it.

007,

Take a look at these two tweaks. They should speed up your computer.

I looked at the links you sent. Is it safe for me to do this? Im a little intimidated. If so, is there a way to undo if I mess-up?

You can actually download the zip files and unzip them. Then double click the .reg file to install it. And yes it is safe.

Before you change anything backup your registry.
How to backup registry

If you have problems, which I seriously doubt that you will, you can restore you registry from the backup you just made.
