Check your wireless card driver status, and ensure it's working well. If not, advise you to re-install the driver with latest version.

If the driver is working well, you can type following command in command prompt (cmd.exe) to see the network info (IP, netmask, gateway) assigned from wireless router. If ok, then you should be able to ping router LAN IP.

ipconfig /all

If not, check the wireless adapter and wireless router configuration, to see any misconfiguration.

Peter - please provide some further information about your system: 1) what is the brand/model of your laptop (assume running on XP SP2); 2) how do you connect to the internet wirelessly - assume you have a router; and 3) the 'wireless' switch not changing is certainly seems like a problem?

First have you tried to 're-boot' all of your equipment, i.e. laptop, router, and cable/DSL modem, if applicable? Often this gets my 'wireless' connection back.

Second, ping your laptop in the cmd window, i.e. 'ping 127.0.0.1' just to make sure your internal TCP/IP settings are still functioning; then, also in the cmd window, perform an 'ipconfig /all' as suggested, and post the results. Good luck -
